Behaviour is communication
Tom explores the importance and impact of the coach's behaviour in how and what they communicate with participants.

One of the most powerful realisations I’ve had as a coach is that behaviour is a form of communication.

When someone is acting out or struggling to engage, it’s not just bad behaviour – it’s them trying to tell us something. So rather than jumping straight to punishment or getting frustrated, I always try to take a step back and ask, “What is this person trying to me with their behaviour?”

Maybe they’re anxious, maybe they don’t feel safe or maybe they just don’t understand what’s being asked.

This shift in mindset leads to a much more compassionate approach – one where the focus is on connecting with the individual before trying to correct their actions. That connection is where real progress begins.
